Event # 8, Salt Creek, Dana Point, March 2, 2008

Creek was absolutely going off for the WSA/Hobie Championship Tour Event #8 on Sunday March 2.  Conditions couldn’t have been better with a light offshore condition all day, overhead peaky surf and Summer like temperatures.  We were going to run the contest on Saturday and Sunday, but out of deference to the locals, we opted to run the event all day on Sunday and have a 3rd competition area for 2 hours.  Still, some locals were upset that there was a contest on one of the best days of the winter.  Ryan Simmons, the voice of the WSA, was in Hawaii helping US Surf Team coach Joey Buran train the team, so ex WCT standout, Marty Thomas, filled in at the mic.  The surf was so good, Marty had to enter the Open Mens Division to surf a few heats in the epic conditions!

Results are below.  Next up is Steamer Lane, Santa Cruz!  Don’t miss out – go to Active.com and register online:

Summer in the Middle of Winter at WSA Oceanside!

After having two rained out contests this season, conditions couldn’t have been better for our rescheduled Oceanside Harbor North Jetty contest.  The sun was out with temps in the mid 70s, there was almost no wind and the surf was a fun chest to head high long period NW.  Thanks to the overwhelming support of competitors and the surf community, WSA is going off!  We had three contest areas running all day with 420 competitors and123 heats!  The beach was packed with competitors and their friends and families. WSA Sponsor – SoCal Volvo Retailers – were on hand showing off the beautiful 2008 Volvos.  They stoked out the hordes of competitors with donuts in the morning and hotdogs for lunch.

With four regular season events left, it’s not too late to surf five events and qualify for our West Coast Championships.  Top rated competitors then go on to the Surfing America USA Championships and Team Trials.

Results - WSA/Hobie Championship Tour Event #7
9th Street, Huntington Beach, January 20, 2008

A super high high tide greeted the competitors in the cold dawn as dozens of anxious competitors tried to beach enter for the few remaining spots in our 9th Street event. It's gettin' a little loco . . . WSA is growing so fast we had to run three ssurfing areas all day! We had to turn away a few surfers, which we don't like to do. Make sure your register online to guarantee your spot in the next event. The tide began to swing out and the surf came to life. There was actually a bit of new swell in the water, and the waves were super fun and contestable. Ace photographer, Jim Coshland was there to capture all the action. Check out the photos of the event at www.CaliforniaSurfingImages.com. Jim spends all day at each of our events capturing the action. He sells the images for $5.00 each and you can print them out any size you want and put them on your MySpace or website. Make sure you buy your images so Jim will stay stoked covering our events!

Plenty of Participants Partook in Perfect Ponto!

We scored!  The WSA headed to Ponto, South Carlsbad for the 4th event in the WSA/Hobie Championship Tour.  WSA sponsor Surfline’s forecast was right on.  The waves were incredible with head high plus lefts reeling off the jetty.  This was the largest WSA in recent history with over 340 entries.  The beach was jammed with competitors, parents and friends all cheering each other on.  We went from dawn ‘til dusk and even had to add a third area to accommodate all of the frothing groms showing up for our super popular MicroGrom and SuperGrom divisions.  The friendly folks from SoCal Volvo were on hand to show off the 2008 Volvos and to burn hot dogs for the hungry hordes.

With six regular season events left, it’s not too late to surf five events and qualify for our West Coast Championships.  Top rated competitors then go on to the Surfing America USA Championships and Team Trials.

We head up the road a bit for our next event at Oceanside Harbor on December 2.  Make sure you get online to register ‘cause this one is going to fill up fast!  We had to turn away competitors at Ponto.  If you register online we will get you in a heat. To register go to Active.com

Event #3 Pismo Beach Pier, October 4, 2007

Ahhh . . . nothing like an authentic funky California beach town in the Fall.  Pismo never disappoints – beautiful crisp weather and fun surf.  The weather was bit blustery the days prior to our contest but Sunday dawned sunny and calm with some nice chest to shoulder high NW wind swell hitting the sandbars on the south side of the pier.  The water was even a toasty 60 degrees!  We had another sell-out crowd, with heats running from dawn ‘til dusk.

Highlights of the day included the Micro Grom division with 2 full heats of stoke.  I get so stoked watching these kids go for it in the double overgrom surf!  Trevor Robbins kept a handle on the under 13 boys longboard division and for good measure, won the 14 – 17 division too!  John “Silver Surfer” Silver took his first win in the Grandmasters division, in a spirited final against Rockin’ Rick Fignetti and the Patrick Schlick.

The central coasters came out to show the crew how it’s done in SLO Town.  Nick Hdez, of Santa Cruz, dazzled the Super Grom Boy’s and boy’s shortboard 12 & 13 division with wins in each.  Amy Covert of Atascadero continued her dominance of the Jr. Women’s division, with Morgan Gore (yes she is related), of Moraga, on her heels in second place.  Dane Anderson of Carmel was unbeatable as he nailed down first in both the Open Men’s Shortboard and Men’s 18 – 29 shortboard divisions.

Our next event is at perfectly pleasing Ponto in South Carlsbad on November 4.  Make sure you get online to register ‘cause this one is going to fill up fast! To register go to Active.com

Event #2 "C" Street Ventura, September 16, 2007

The beach was packed for the 2nd event in the WSA Hobie Championship Tour at “C” Street Ventura. The weather was perfect and the wind stayed down for the most part in the afternoons. The only thing that didn’t cooperate was the surf. Don’t get me wrong, it was plenty fun and contestable, but it’s been a slow Summer and the reports of the Southern Hemi that filtered into the Boost Mobile ASP World Tour Contest at Lower Trestles right on schedule on Saturday had us hoping for a bit bigger surf in Ventura on Sunday. This was our Donnie Solomon Memorial Event to benefit the Red Cross of Ventura. The Red Cross was selling raffle tickets for some great prizes all day, Olas Mex Grill was grilling lunch for the masses and Donnie’s dad, Randy, was the Master of Ceremonies for the awards presentation.

It was a full day, with heats running from sun up to sundown. There were some great performances in the challenging conditions. Kirra Kehoe took first in both Girls’ Shortboard 13 - 15 and Girls’ Longboard 13 - 17. Eli Gillis dominated the Boys’ Longboard 14 - 17 division. San Clemente’s Trevor Thornton grabbed 1st in his 1st WSA event in the Boys’ Shortboard 12 - 13 division. Local knowledge prevailed in the Girls’ Shortboard 16 & 17 division as Oxnard’s Chelsea Rauhut took the win. Terry Gillard continues to amaze as he entered 4 divisions and won three of them including Senior Men’s Longboard 30+, Open Men’s Longboard and Senior Men’s Shortboard 40 - 49.

Our next event is at the ever-popular Pismo Pier on Sunday, October 7. This is always a fun event, so make plans to attend. We encourage you to sign up online early. We hate turning away competitors at the beach, but we book the heats pretty solid before the day of the event. To register go to Active.com

Event #1 Trail 6 San Onofre, August 11 & 12, 2007

What a great way to kick off the new season! We had a sell out crowd for our season opener with tons of new faces in the competition. We also launched our new Micro Grom 8 and under boys/girls long/shortboard division. This division allows adults to push in and was a blast to watch. We had two full heats of Micro Groms and 24 Super Grom 11 and under competitors. The surf was a fun SW pulse with some NW windswell offering good surfable waves in the waist to chest high zone. The sun came out early, Pipes Cafe supplied the pancakes and OJ and the WSA burnt hot dogs for the crowd for lunch. IZZE Beverage Company provided ice cold drinks and Arrowhead kept the crowd hydrated on the dog day of summer.

There were many stand out performances, and it will be a competitive season as the march begins for WSA 07/08 West Coast Championships and coveted slots in the Surfing America USA Championships and Team Trials.
