Results - WSA Hobie Championship Tour Hoppy Swarts Memorial West Coast Championships
Church Beach, San Onofre, May 10 & 11, 2008

Flat surf, May gray and the evil south wind on Friday, gave way to morning calm, building south swell and a mid-morning burn off, producing epic conditions for the Western Surfing Association (WSA)/Hobie Hoppy Swarts Memorial West Coast Surfing Championships at Church Beach, San Onofre last weekend!  What a championship we had!  A record 245 surfers surfed the minimum five regular season events to qualify for the West Coast Championships and nearly all of them participated despite conflicts with Mother’s Day, Proms and three other major surf contest the same weekend.

WSA Jr. Men’s Longboard stand-out, Scott Brandenburg, survived a car crash in route to the contest when the front wheel came off of his truck leaving the vehicle on it’s side on the highway.  Scott was shaken, but the wheels didn’t come off in his surfing as he managed to make his heat in time and advance to the semi-finals that ended just 45 minutes before his prom date was expecting him for pictures in San Clemente.  He came back Sunday after a late night and took the win in the Boys Longboard 14 -17 division and secured a coveted slot in the upcoming SIMA Surfing America US Championships presented by Pac Sun (US Championships) August 19 – 24 at the Huntington Beach Pier.

Another stand out was WSA iron man, Terry Gillard, who qualified to surf in four divisions: Open Men’s Shortboard, Open Men’s Longboard, Senior Men’s Shortboard 40 – 49 and Senior Men’s Longboard 30+.  After a grueling two days of multiple heats he ended up taking the win in Senior Men’s Longboard, 2nd in Open Men’s Longboard, 3rd in Senior Men’s Shortboard and the Season Champion Trophy in Senior Men’s Longboard and Open Men’s Longboard.  He will also be representing the WSA at the US Championships.

Oceanside’s Heather Jordan swept 1st in every heat on her way to 1st place in the Girl’s 16 – 17 Shortboard division.  She too, scored an invite to the US Championships.  Anneke Barrie had an inconsistent regular season in Girls 13 – 17 Longboard this year, but she turned on the turbos to power her way to 1st place in the West Coast Championships.

This year WSA reached out to AccesSurf Hawaii to host a division for challenged athletes.  Eight surfers overcoming physical challenges ranging from quadriplegia to Muscular Dystrophy competed in two exhibition heats and a final heat.  These talented surfers were truly inspirational to the hordes of spectators on the beach.  Former Pro Surfer, Jesse Billauer, who became a quadriplegic after a surfing accident in 1996, was absolutely amazing as he dropped into a set right and drove it all the way down the line.  Ryan Levinson, who is battling the degeneration of his muscles due to Muscular Dystrophy, was beaming after coming in from his final heat.  “It was so great to be able to go out and compete again”, said Levinson.  “I haven’t competed since college and it was so great to be able to go out and surf a great wave by ourselves and not have people looking at me like I’m a barney!”  Ryan has no outward appearance of his condition and when surfing it is a struggle for him to get to his feet and maintain his balance.  He got to his feet just fine in the final and ripped a wave to an impressive 8-point (out of 10) score, which earned him 2nd place.

A fun, family, party atmosphere prevailed during the event with the TransWorld Surf crew keeping the groms constantly amused with endless beach games, give-a-ways and contests.  Nalu’s Island Grill provided an amazing endless buffet of their delicious “Island Style” grinds to everyone on the beach both days.  Pipe’s Café provided pancakes, coffee and orange juice for everyone both mornings with TransWorld’s Nate Feliz expertly manning the griddle.  A continuous raffle of great prizes donated by Ocean Minded, Betty Belts, iMainGo Portable iPod Speakers, Trunq Surf Accessories and Drew Brophy, had no one leaving home empty handed.

Thanks to all the WSA surfers that competed this season and our generous sponsors.  We look forward to our 2008/2009 Season kicking off on August 10 at Trail 6 San Onofre.  Go to www.SurfWSA.org and add your name to our email list to be kept up to date on all the latest WSA events and news.
